Wayne has a Region IV Office of Developmental
Disabilities. This is an agency
providing habilitation services to children and adults living in the 20
counties of northeast Nebraska. The
agency has service sites in seven communities.
The Wayne office operates an Adult Developmental Center and eight residential
settings.
Residents in Wayne can participate in
the Educational Service Unit #1, which is headquartered in Wakefield and serves
a six-county area. One major satellite
program is located in Wayne to serve the mild/moderate and behaviorally
disordered students as referred by school districts throughout the region. ESU #1 serves special needs children from
birth to age 21 by providing various services such as speech therapy,
audiology, psychology, vision impaired, transition counseling, school nurse,
and physical and occupational therapy.
Northeast Community College provides
additional educational opportunities through their location in Norfolk using
distance-learning technology in partnership with Wayne High School and Wayne
State College. They also offer seminars
on a wide variety of topics in their Lifelong Learning Center.
Wayne is also the home of Wayne State
College, which serves about 3,500 students throughout Nebraska and Iowa as well
as several other states, and some foreign countries. WSC offers more than 40 majors and minors in four academic
schools including: School of Arts & Humanities, School of Business &
Technology, School of Education & Counseling, and School of Natural &
Social Sciences. Masters degrees are
